The Latest Mayhem Mounts Update Introduces a Stunningly Wild New Spear to Your World
The seasonal game drop for the block-building phenomenon has landed — and it brings with it the first new weapon added to the game since the heavy club made its debut. The javelin is finally here and it might just change how you play Minecraft, especially if you thrive on pandemonium.
A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem
The Mounts of Mayhem update also introduces several new features and enhancements centered around riding animals in the game. That driving concept made the spear the ideal addition for this update, as the creators had already known it was the moment to introduce a fresh combat tool.
"From the outset, we understood that we aimed for a fresh armament that would provide extended reach, and we envisioned it for fighting from atop a creature," explained a lead developer. "We tried out a number of concepts, but the spear was the one that both played wonderfully when we tested our prototypes and also made sense for the use case."
If you're wondering whether mounted combat means you can charge at your allies on steeds, the answer is a resounding yes. In fact, there's even an offensive action ideally crafted for it.
"[Jousting on horses is a major functions for the spear, and it's a blast," the lead continues. "The spear has two attacks: You have the thrust, where you just stab your enemy. But you also have a powerful lance where you lower your spear and deal more damage [with] the more pace you have. So [it’s] tailor-made for jousting on horses."
Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration
The chaotic fun isn't limited to there, though. If you're deep enough into the game that you've been to The End, the developers have an even more ridiculous idea. "If you are in the end-game, [spears are] excellent for strapping on the wings and taking to the skies and unleashing absolute pandemonium," she suggests.
In other words: Sky jousting is now real, and it deserves to be an Olympic sport immediately.
Another key feature in this fresh content is the underwater mount. This underwater creature, which is based on the seashells found in-game for years, can be tamed and ridden for submarine exploration. Not only will it move you through the water faster than swimming, it'll also conserve your breath meter, so there's no need to return to the surface for oxygen.
The other inclusions are mostly things that are out to get you, as is the nature of Minecraft. Naturally, there's also a rotting sea creature appearing in the water, often with a Drowned on its back. If you are able to defeat the Drowned, though, you can befriend the undead mount — or the regular one, for that matter — with a puffer fish.
"We've been thinking about this problem for some time, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it felt like the perfect moment to also bring in something for the ocean depths," the lead elaborates. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a several proposals for aquatic rides that we wanted to experiment with, but the Nautilus design sketches looked striking, and we have the link to the Nautilus shell that was pre-existing in the game."
She also adds that there are actually two distinct kinds of zombie Nautilus: regular and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] give some flavor to what you find underwater."
Desert Dangers and Long-Awaited Tweaks
Other additions include the Parched, biome-specific skeletons that can endure the sun, which means there's no getting away from them if you venture in that region. Sometimes you'll see them on desiccated dromedaries, another new mob. Camel husks have an striking appearance that sees their bones protruding. The applies equally to zombie horses, who have a comparable rib-popping design and can sometimes be spawned in the darkness with a spear-carrying zombie on their back.
The last two things on the drop's list are minor quality-of-life improvements, including some long-overdue tweaks to equestrian travel. Now, you can ford bodies of water while atop a horse. Additionally, high-tier barding is now available at the crafting table, so you can provide your steed with the ultimate protection it is worthy of.
A Spicy Send-Off for the Year
All told, the last content update of the year is a solid offering. The spear on its own — and the pandemonium it invites — would have seemed like a significant enhancement. Add in the Nautilus, and additional creatures trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a touch more chaotic.
The Mounts of Mayhem update is available for Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft.
