A Major Tease for Upcoming Installments
The series creator disclosed an inside detail about “It's a Deal” – it serves as a major tease for the third season. She also provided more insight into the methodology of creating the mortal forms of her infernal animated characters.
Spoiler alert for episode 4 of Hazbin Hotel, the show's second season.
In the episode, a look back reveals that popular personality Alastor, the Radio Demon was a serial killer in his mortal days. Knowing full well he was destined for Hell, he made contact with the realm beyond beforehand to secure a strong position there. Rosie, who leads the cannibal faction in Hell, vowed Alastor he would become “the most powerful Sinner in Hell” in exchange for his soul.
This prompts an important query: How is this character powerful enough to raise Alastor over every other Demonic Sinners?
“The agreement between Rosie and Alastor is the initial building block in a much bigger story that encompasses so much, leading into the third season,” the creator explains. “Clearly that is a perfect question: How is she so strong? The answer might be many things, but the revelation is in season three. I am thrilled for fans to see it.”
There’s no telling the duration the audience will have to wait for Hazbin Hotel’s next season. The production companies have green-lit the third and fourth seasons, but the creator often remarks that animation is a slow, lengthy process, and later seasons are undated. Still, she states holding off on specific information is a crucial aspect of maintaining season 2’s focus where it belongs.
“The difficulty of any kind of deal with infernal beings, or narratives that have enigmas, is providing the audience sufficient clues to be like, Something's up here, and then unveiling that as we go, and letting that be satisfying,” she comments. “So I'm very excited.”
Questions Answered in Season 3
The showrunner promises that the upcoming season will tackle the questions followers have been posing, such as why Rosie commanded Alastor to disappear for a seven-year period, which diminished his power in the infernal realm.
“The entire seven-year span, and the pacts these individuals are doing, and everything — it's feeding into a bigger narrative,” she says.
Meanwhile, the origin story episode provides another glimpse into what the main characters of Sinner Demons looked like as humans, the second after seeing Sir Pentious’ historical mortal appearance in episode 2. She explains that a lot of thought was put into the visual creation of these forms.
“The human versions of the characters carry great significance,” she says. “They range from appearing quite distinct from their demon form to looking very similar. With the first character, the initial design we see, there was a little bit of a debate within the team between choosing a design that symbolizes the personality, versus going with something that's historically correct. We opted for creating something that just felt like it was him.”
She says the biggest debate over the mortal look of Pentious was his long hair: “We were like, ‘Nobody really had extended hair of that style in Victorian-era London.’ But at the same time, we believe the silhouette is so important, and we also just thought he appeared attractive. We were like, ‘This just feels right.’ We sort of provided the rationale that he lived in seclusion, so he just allowed his hair to lengthen. So there is always a solution. As we design the mortal forms of these personas […] it is a very enjoyable process to explore and figure out. I am looking forward for people to view additional of what the human forms look like.”
