Substantial Online Outage Hits Numerous Online Platforms and Applications

A widespread web outage has affected dozens sites and mobile apps around the world, as users noting problems accessing the internet due to difficulties at the web hosting system.

The impacted platforms comprise Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, in addition to a host of Amazon-operated services such as its key e-commerce platform and the Ring doorbell company.

Across the United Kingdom, Lloyds bank was disrupted along with its affiliates the bank Halifax and the Scottish bank, while there were also reports of issues accessing the HMRC online portal on that morning. Additionally in Britain, multiple Ring customers used social media to report their home gadgets were failing.

Solely in the United Kingdom, accounts of problems on particular applications ran into the thousands for each app.

Officials confirmed that the problem originated in the Atlantic coast of the America at Amazon Web Services, a unit that supplies essential online backbone for numerous businesses, who lease resources on Amazon servers. The cloud platform is the biggest global cloud computing service.

Shortly after midnight (PDT) in the United States (morning UK time), Amazon confirmed “increased failure rates and slowdowns” for AWS services in a zone on the Atlantic seaboard of the US. The widespread consequence was seen to hit platforms around the world, with the outage tracking website indicating issues with the corresponding services in various regions.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a tool that tracks online failures, also reported a rise in outages on Monday morning, including several cases located in the state of Virginia, the site of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where the company stated the problems started.
