Students Share Worries That AI Is Eroding Their Study Abilities, Research Reveals
Based on latest research, pupils are expressing worries that using artificial intelligence is negatively impacting their capacity to study. Many report it renders schoolwork “overly simple”, while others argue it hinders their creativity and prevents them from developing new skills.
Widespread Utilization of AI Among Pupils
An analysis focused on the use of artificial intelligence in British schools revealed that just 2% of pupils aged 13 and 18 said they did not use artificial intelligence for their schoolwork, while 80% reported they regularly utilized it.
Adverse Effect on Abilities
Regardless of artificial intelligence's widespread use, 62% of the pupils stated it has had a unfavorable impact on their abilities and growth at their educational institution. One in four of the participants affirmed that artificial intelligence “facilitates accessing solutions without independent work”.
Another 12% reported artificial intelligence “hinders my original thought”, while similar numbers stated they were less inclined to solve problems or write creatively.

A specialist in AI technology remarked that the study was among the first to examine how young people in the UK were integrating artificial intelligence into their learning.
“I am particularly impressed by the nuanced understanding displayed,” the specialist commented. “For 60% of students to say they are concerned that AI tools encourage copying rather than doing original work, that’s a very deep understanding of what your schoolwork is meant to help you do, and what the pitfalls and benefits are associated with this technology.”

These discoveries are consistent with empirical analyses on the use of artificial intelligence in education. One analysis assessed brain electrical activity while composition tasks among students using advanced AI systems and determined: “The outcomes highlight worries regarding the enduring academic consequences of dependency on AI and emphasize the necessity for further exploration of its educational impact.”
Almost 50% of the 2,000 students surveyed expressed they were concerned their fellow students were “surreptitiously utilizing AI” for schoolwork without their teachers being able to detect it.
Request for Support and Positive Components
Numerous respondents stated that they sought more assistance from educators for the appropriate usage of AI and in assessing whether its output was trustworthy. A project intended to aiding educators with AI education is being launched.

Just 31% indicated they didn’t think utilizing AI had a negative influence on any of their abilities. But, most of respondents reported using AI assisted them gain fresh abilities, including 18% who indicated it aided them comprehend challenges, and 15% who said it assisted them generate “innovative and improved” ideas.
Student Viewpoints
When requested to expand, one 15-year-old female pupil said: “My comprehension of mathematics has improved, and AI assists me in tackling complex problems.”
