{'I could have killed them' - Lawson faces near miss with F1 track officials
Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson stated he came dangerously close to a life-threatening incident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two safety personnel ran across the track immediately ahead of his car
The dangerous situation took place on the third rotation when safety workers were seen on the track as Lawson was returning to the race following an early pitstop to swap his broken nose section
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Shortly afterward, the team's competitor Lawson communicated to his pit wall engineer saying: "Is this for real? Could you believe what happened? I might have... taken their lives"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was observing"
"I came out on a brand new hard tyres, and then I approached Turn One and suddenly there were two guys sprinting across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, honestly, it was extremely hazardous"
Track Safety Questioned
"Obviously there's been a miscommunication somewhere but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a active circuit marshals can be authorized to just dash across the track like that. I have no idea why, I'm confident we'll get some kind of clarification, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Governing Body Reviewing
F1's overseeing organization, the FIA, is actively examining the circumstances
"Following a turn one incident, track officials was notified that fragments were located on the track at the critical section of that bend" declared the regulatory authority
"In the third rotation, marshals were alerted and put on alert to go onto the racing surface and recover the debris once all cars had passed"
"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had pitted, the instructions to dispatch personnel were rescinded and a safety warning flag was raised in that area"
"The examination is ongoing what occurred subsequent to that time"
