Arnaud Kalimuendo Scores as Nottingham Forest Secure Nostalgic Triumph Over Malmö

“You’ll never sing that, champions of Europe,” rang out through the ground as Nottingham Forest followers reveled in another success against their Swedish opponents. Much has happened since Trevor Francis’s decisive header secured the European Cup back in 1979, but the club continue to cherish those glorious moments. Similarly, significant changes have taken place in the five weeks since Sean Dyche took charge, with the team appearing refreshed and earning a comfortable win courtesy of goals from Arnaud Kalimuendo, Yates, and Milenkovic, enhancing their prospects of progressing in the European competition.

Building Steam with Another Consecutive Victory

For Forest, this performance – against a Swedish side that had not played for nearly a month after ending sixth in their domestic league – represented a third straight win across every tournament and added to the positive energy generated from the previous week's stunning victory at Anfield. While this fixture was a reminder of the club's European Cup triumph in name, the game itself was devoid of any real jeopardy or nerves.

It proved to be an event dripping in nostalgia, an longed-for reunion and the third competitive meeting between the teams since the showpiece event 46 years ago.

Forest fully embraced the heritage, honoring the legends of 1979 by providing them, along with their Malmö counterparts, the red-carpet treatment. 13 members of the Malmö's team from that time were also in attendance. Both teams enjoyed a dinner together before the kick-off. Frank Clark, Colin Barrett and company were given a rousing reception when they assembled on the pitch a quarter of an hour before kick-off, and a characteristically superb tifo was unveiled in the home stand.

Recalling History

“May 30, 1979, John Robertson delivered the ball from the left,” displayed half of a large tifo, in capital letters. While nobody needed reminding of what ensued, the remaining section was unfurled as the players emerged from the dressing rooms. “There is Francis,” it stated. A second brilliant display showed Clough observing events beside his right-hand man Peter Taylor on a dugout at the Munich stadium.

Control from the Start

So, Forest had soaked up those beautiful recollections, but what about the performance on the night? It was pretty good, as well. They were in full command from the moment the forward whistled an effort off target inside the opening moments and built a two-goal lead by the break. Nicolás Domínguez sent an early header off target and then Abbott, on his maiden European start, had a go.

It felt fitting that Ryan Yates, who came to Forest as an eight-year-old, made the initial breakthrough in the visitors' defense captained by their own academy product captain, Jansson, formerly of Leeds United and Brentford FC. The home defender Milenkovic saw a delivery cannon off a defender and into the pathway of the midfielder, who finished right-footed from the edge of the box to register his first goal since last March.

Second Strike Confirms Dominance

Yates was involved in the team's second goal on the brink of half-time, as well, his free header parried by the shot-stopper Ellborg but Kalimuendo on hand to tap in the rebound from close range. James McAtee, the playmaker handed a seldom start and just his second appearance since September, was the spark, lofting a delicious ball towards Yates at the far post.

Just moments before, Hudson-Odoi’s low effort was deflected aside off Malmö back Colin Rösler, son of ex- Manchester City striker Uwe, and an free Milenkovic also earlier had a powerful header smartly saved by Ellborg, who returned in place of the former Aston Villa goalie Robin Olsen.

Malmö’s Difficulties

This was the Swedish side's initial game since the Swedish Allsvenskan ended on November 9th, and they found it hard to match the home team's energy. Forest extended the lead to three when the defender applied the finishing touch after his defensive colleague Murillo kept alive a corner. The captain had a volley blocked, but the Serbia centre-back Milenkovic feasted on the leftovers.

The home side then went for the jugular, with Hudson-Odoi dinking a right-foot shot on to the bar before Sangaré sent an optimistic shot wide from distance. It was one of those evenings. The manager, mindful of Sunday’s league game here against Brighton, implemented seven changes from the team that stunned the Reds at Anfield recently, when they additionally netted three goals, though he called on Elliot Anderson, Dan Ndoye and Igor Jesus during the second half.

Hiccup-Free Evening for the Team

It proved a flawless evening for Nottingham Forest. The coach could withdraw Murillo with the match long since sewn up and later introduced teenage full-back Jimmy Sinclair for his senior bow. Dyche discussed the Forest old guard supplying “valuable insights” at regular meetings and, almost five decades on, the current crop showed they are able of producing of thrills, as well.
