2026 is Poised to Be Dubbed the Age of the Frog Game.

While I found the recent Day of the Devs showcase was highly engaging, my main revelation was not the intended one: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these amphibious creatures. Considering a collection of frogs is called an army, it appears they are launching an invasion.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Frogs are anything but new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a cult following. However, their prevalence has markedly increased in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are obscure titles, a great many are legitimate Frog Games.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To quantify this phenomenon, I conducted a detailed review into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My methodology was admittedly subjective, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The data reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The frog's elevated place in the public consciousness is somewhat visible elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the trend in gaming appears particularly powerful.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

In my opinion, this is a shift I can fully endorse. Frogs possess natural creative potential for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are incredibly easy to be designed as endearing characters that tend to be a standout feature in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their stretchy limbs and sticky tongues lend themselves to a host of innovative control schemes.

Many of the showcased games directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even begun—and the chance for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the biggest year yet.

When these games perform well—and historically, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we could very well be entering a full-blown croaking cultural moment.
